Dishwasher Leaves Dishes Wet: Heating Element and Thermistor Checks

Rinse aid helps plastics, but if the tub is still cool after heated dry, the element or temperature sensing circuit is usually the problem—not your detergent.

Modern dishwashers dry mostly with a calrod heating element under the bottom rack plus a final hot rinse. If glassware is cool and spotted with water after a heated-dry cycle, do not start with fancy rinse-aid myths—verify heat.

Two-minute sensory test

Run a normal cycle with heated dry. Mid-cycle (after wash fill), carefully open the door: you should feel warm air and see the element area warming. Stone cold the whole time = no heat call for power. Scalding hot wash but wet plastics only = often rinse aid / plastic thermal mass, not a dead element.

Continuity on the element

  1. Kill power at the breaker (dishwashers are often hardwired).
  2. Pull the unit, remove the bottom access panel or kickplate.
  3. Disconnect the element leads and measure across the element: typically 10–50 Ω depending on wattage. OL = open element.
  4. Check each terminal to the tub (ground). Continuity to ground = shorted element; replace before it trips GFCI/breakers.

Thermistor / NTC sensor

If the element ohms out good but the board never calls for heat, the control may be reading a bad temperature sensor. Many Bosch, KitchenAid, and Samsung units publish NTC resistance charts (e.g. ~50kΩ at room temp—follow your model’s sheet). Wild readings mean replace the sensor before you condemn the board.
